In a trailblazing collaboration between clean energy and compliance, a European producer becomes the first to guarantee the traceability of its green and renewable hydrogen with a Digital Product Passport.
Lhyfe, a pioneering producer and supplier of green and renewable hydrogen for industry and mobility, has joined forces with Atmen, an integrated compliance automation platform, expert in energy-intensive sectors.
Together, they are setting new standards for carbon footprint traceability and transparency within hydrogen and Power-to-X (P2X) renewable electricity conversion markets.
The collaboration has already begun with the first shipments out of the Lhyfe production unit at Bouin, in the Vendée department, Pays de la Loire region, in France, and will be extended to other company sites.
Digital Product Passport for full transparency
Each delivery of green and renewable hydrogen from Lhyfe can now include a Digital Product Passport, offering buyers full transparency on both the origin and the carbon footprint of hydrogen production.
The breakdown of information in the footprint covers three key aspects of production:
- Energy sourcing — where, when, and how electricity used in the production process was generated;
- Embedded emissions — a step-by-step breakdown of the carbon intensity calculations; plus
- Supply chain contribution — details on the impact of each processing and logistics stage.
Trust in sustainability credentials is key, says Antoine Hamon, Chief Operations Officer at Lhyfe:
“Our collaboration with Atmen is a major step in realising our commitment to transparency for our clients, both in terms of sustainability and traceability. With Digital Product Passports, we are enhancing trust in the sustainability of our hydrogen. We invite the sector to align with this practice.”
Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin
Lhyfe has also initiated steps to obtain RFNBO certification for hydrogen produced at its various sites. Once achieved, the digital passports will then include the RFNBO-compliant label.
Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification confirms that hydrogen is produced sustainably (via water electrolysis) and from 100% renewable electricity.
The RFNBO includes a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment of this production process. Certification ensures compliance with the strict criteria defined by the European Union and adherence to the highest environmental standards, thereby strengthening trust among partners, clients, and investors.
Simplifying compliance with sustainability
By combining Lhyfe’s expertise in green and renewable hydrogen and Atmen’s advanced automation software, this partnership simplifies compliance with strict sustainability regulations like RFNBO.
Benefits of the joint approach include:
- Precision in reporting — high-accuracy carbon intensity calculations ensure full transparency;
- Compliance automation — Digital Product Passports reduce human intervention for improved efficiency;
- Granular client alignment — to meet emissions and decarbonisation targets with unprecedented detail.
The collaboration has raised the bar for the sector, concludes Flore de Durfort, CEO of Atmen:
“Atmen is thrilled to partner with Lhyfe, one of the most innovative and fastest-growing hydrogen producers in Europe. Together, we are setting a new standard in traceability, enabling the hydrogen sector to meet the strictest sustainability requirements with precision and transparency.”
Pioneering production, with unparalleled precision
Lhyfe is a European group devoted to the energy transition, and a producer and supplier of green and renewable hydrogen, in industrial quantities. When it comes to hydrogen, the company is a true pioneer.
In 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated the first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant interconnected with a wind farm. In 2022, it launched the first offshore green hydrogen production pilot platform in the world.
Listed on the Euronext market in Paris, Lhyfe is represented in 12 European countries, with some 200 staff.
Atmen simplifies and automates green certification for energy-intensive industries through its integrated compliance platform. The platform enables producers to track renewable energy usage, carbon intensity, and supply chain sustainability with unparalleled precision. By automating complex workflows related to green compliance, Atmen helps industries meet regulatory requirements efficiently and transparently.
